Shearer tells Arsenal exactly what Guimaraes will offer in dream midfield set-up

The Brazilian has been a target for Arsenal all summer, and the midfielder now looks set to become the latest new addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of their Premier League title defence.

Guimaraes only returned to pre-season duties with Newcastle on Monday after being given an extended break following his participation at the World Cup with Brazil.

Arsenal will now be expected to finalise the remaining formalities of the transfer before Guimaraes officially moves to the Emirates Stadium.

Shearer has now explained why Arsenal should be delighted to get a deal for Guimaraes over the line, listing the qualities that the Brazilian will be able to provide the Gunners next season.

“Arsenal are signing a top-quality player in Bruno,” Shearer said in an interview with Betfair. “There's no doubt about that.

"They're signing a player who's so comfortable on the ball under pressure, who can make that killer pass.

“He's got a great attitude. We've seen that at Newcastle. So, there's no doubt he'll improve them.

“I think with the likes of [Martin] Odegaard, [Declan] Rice and Bruno [Guimaraes], there won't be many better midfields than those three.”

Arsenal’s deal to sign Guimaraes comes less than a week after news emerged that Eddie Howe would be leaving his role as Newcastle manager.

It was reported at the time that Howe’s exit happened with the belief that Guimaraes would eventually be sold to Arsenal before the September 1 deadline.

Should a deal be completed, Guimaraes will be expected to become the third new signing for Arsenal this summer, joining Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis in signing for the reigning Premier League champions.
