Alvarez gives Arsenal transfer hope as Atletico star's stance on move clear

Football London · Bruna Reis

With the summer window closing at 11pm on September 1, Arsenal may now need to accelerate their plans. Their hesitation up to this point has largely stemmed from Alvarez’s long‑stated preference to join Atlético's rivals Barcelona.

That stance has shaped much of the summer - and even contributed to his absence from Atletico's opening‑day La Liga win over Malaga on Thursday night. Diego Simeone admitted in his pre‑match press conference that the Argentina international was 'not in condition to play in this match.'

Heading into the final days of the window, a fresh update from Spanish newspaper AS claims that Alvarez now views a switch to the Emirates as an alternative that isn't completely ruled out even if it remains a move he does not actively desire.

According to the report, his 'no' to the English champions is 'still valid, but without completely forgetting that option.' The Argentine continues to prioritise Barcelona, yet with the situation becoming increasingly complicated, he could ultimately settle for a Premier League return.

Arsenal have been working on his signing for some time, monitoring developments around Barcelona's pursuit. It's also noted that Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta have maintained frequent contact with the forward, who has 'been grateful' for the club's interest.

Meanwhile, The Standard have positioned Arsenal as the frontrunners for Alvarez's signature, with the relationship between the forward and Atletico reportedly becoming increasingly strained as he continues to push for a move away from Madrid.

Simeone has also confirmed that Alvarez will be included in the squad to face Villarreal on Sunday.

"Julian Alvarez will be in the squad tomorrow," Simeone insisted in his press conference. "For me, Julian is an extremely important player for us to achieve our objectives, As long as he’s with the team, I’m going to look after him."

The fanbase, meanwhile, appear to have turned their backs on Alvarez, but Simeone has continued to defend the forward publicly: "I respect our fans, I always have, but I don’t agree with insults or abuse. Every word is being scrutinised by people waiting to create conflict and uncertainty.

"There is no uncertainty. Miguel was very clear. He is our player and we need him."
