Aston Villa in talks over Bayern Munich loan transfer

As Aston Villa finalise deals for two new midfielders, there could still be a third arrival in that area of the pitch.

Joao Palhinha, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from Bayern Munich, is being targeted to further bolster Unai Emery’s midfield options.

Talks over a loan move for the Portuguese midfielder have already taken place, with Villa looking to replace both Youri Tielemans, who left for Manchester United, and the injured Amadou Onana.

Johan Manzambi and Gomes are both set to undergo medicals ahead of becoming Villa players in the coming days, and a loan move for Palhinha would go some way towards replacing Onana next season, with the Belgian expected to miss most, if not all, of the next campaign.

Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham in the summer of 2024 but struggled to make an impact before being allowed to return to the Premier League with Spurs last term.

The 31-year-old made 45 appearances across all competitions, starting 23 Premier League matches and featuring in eight of the club’s Champions League fixtures.

Emery likes to have plenty of options in midfield, though the arrival of three midfielders this summer could put the futures of Ross Barkley and Lamare Bogarde in some doubt.

Villa have held initial talks with Bogarde over a new deal but would also be open to a sale should the right offer be tabled.

Barkley, meanwhile, has interest from elsewhere, but Emery does value his role in the squad, especially given the number of matches his team could play next season.
