Coventry City v Newcastle United combined injury news ahead of Monday's clash

Coventry Telegraph · Andy Turner

Frank Lampard is hoping as many of his players come through the final few days of the international break as possible as he prepares for Coventry City’s Premier League return on Monday.

After a three-week hiatus, with many of his squad scattered across the globe, the Sky Blues boss’s attention will have turned to preparing to face Newcastle United.

The head coach will be particularly keen to see the likes of Jay Dasilva return unscathed from his duty with Wales, along with Frank Onyeka, Taiwo Awoniyi (Nigeria), Caleb Yirenkyi, Brandon Thomas-Asante (Ghana), Stephen Mfuni (England U-21s), Yann Gboho (Ivory Coast) and Joel Latibeaudiere (Jamaica).

Meanwhile, four players have been stepping up their rehabilitation back at Ryton ahead of the next block of fixtures which includes three home games against the Magpies, Fulham and Sunderland.

Milan van Ewijk sat out the Forest game with a slight hamstring issue but is expected to be fit again this week, while midfielder Josh Eccles is hoped to be back training after sitting out with a calf strain. Elsewhere, defenders Luke Woolfenden and Kaine Kesler-Hayden - who have been out since the summer - are due back in training but are expected to require a bit more time to work on their fitness before being considered to return to the matchday squad.

Players definitely out are striker Awoniyi, who is set to serve his final match ban on Monday, Haji Wright and Aurele Amenda. Wright is due back from a quad strain at the end of this month while centre-back Amenda is out until Christmas with a calf tear.

Meanwhile, the Magpies have been dealing with an injury crisis during the extended international break with several first-team players out injured. Along with the players on international duty, Matthias Jaissle’s side trained with just six first-team players earlier this week in a session supplemented by Under-21s players.

Newcastle will expect to have Nico Gonzalez and Joelinton back for the trip to Coventry after the duo returned to first-team training following their respective injuries. They have recently been dealt two fresh concerns, though, after Lewis Miley and Ewen Jaouen withdrew from their respective England and France Under-21s squads.

Elsewhere in the squad, Anthony Elanga, William Osula, Dan Burn, Jacob Ramsey and Tino Livramento have been suffering from various injury issues and could all miss the trip to Coventry. Burn is understood to be the closest to a return of that group but hasn’t featured in a competitive match so far this season.
