Steve McClaren 'eyeing' Derby County reunion after Pride Park exit

Andi Weimann is a target for Rotherham United, after leaving Derby County in the summer.

That’s according to Football League World who reckon the Millers, who were relegated to League Two last season, are ‘eyeing up’ the 34-year-old who had two spells with the Rams.

The first was between 2015 and 2018, during which time, for three months, he worked with Steve McClaren who was in his second stint as manager. McClaren is now head of football at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Weimann returned to Derby last summer but was loaned out to Rapid Wien in the second half of the campaign. His official release came in June.

Overall he has played 115 times for the Rams and has also played for Blackburn, Bristol City and Aston Villa, among others.

However, he is a free agent now and the Millers are looking to rebuild a squad that has been demoted twice in the last three seasons.

Much will depend on where the Austrian sees his future, and whether McClaren can sell a project in the fourth tier of English football.

Weimann might also remember the fact that McClaren only started him once during their time together in the 2016/17 campaign before he was sent on loan to Wolves.

Of the players released by Derby at the end of last season, Callum Elder has signed a two-year-deal with Lincoln City, while Weimann, Jake Rooney, Ben Osborn and Danny Batth are yet to find new clubs.
