Flemming impresses as Town left well-beaten by Arsenal in Carabao Cup

It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Ipswich Town exited the Carabao Cup via a 4-2 home defeat to Arsenal. Stuart Watson hands out his player grades.

Christian Walton - 5

Back between the sticks for another cup game. Undercooked pass out the back led to Arsenal's second. Couldn't do much about the the other three.

Darnell Furlong - 6

Took the captain's armband for the first time with Dara O'Shea rested. Largely kept Eberechi Eze quiet. Wasn't really involved with any of the goals.

Cedric Kipre - 5

Was bamboozled by Max Dowman for the opener and was fortunate one poor clearance wasn't punished. Went on to make several blocks and clearances though.

Jacob Greaves - 5

Like Kipre, he was involved in numerous defensive actions after Arsenal cut their way to goal. A fraction off the pace for goals two and three.

Abdoul Ouattara - 5

Summer signing from Strasbourg made only his second start in English football. A little clumsy for the second, while goals three and four came down his side. Three really threatening moments charging forwards though. Not sure left-back is his best position.

Florentino Luis - 5

After an injury-hit pre-season, the Portuguese midfielder had a positive impact off the bench at Crystal Palace but wasn't able to build on that on what was his full debut. Odd sharp touch and interception was overshadowed by some sloppy giveaways and off the pace pressing. Clearly not fully match fit yet.

Marcelino Nunez - 6

Saw plenty of the ball and generally looked after it well. Covered plenty of ground as usual. Still part of a midfield that was overrun.

Kasey McAteer - 5

Loose pass led to Arsenal's early opener. Often dropped into a right-back position to create a back five. Hustled and bustled.

Anis Mehmeti - 6

Fired a good chance over in the first half and then coolly converted with a first time side-footed shot in the second. Worked hard for the team.

Jaden Philogene - 5

First start of the campaign after an injury-hit pre-season. The odd sharp moment - including a crowd-pleasing backheel - but another who, understandably, looked far from fully fit and firing.

Zian Flemming - 7 (Town MOTM)

Impressed on his full debut. Fought centre-halves, saw a well-struck volley blocked and set up Mehmeti with a deft cut back when the ball fell out the sky. Back to goal link play in deep pockets was superb.

Jack Clarke (for Philogene, 61) - 7

Skipped past Martin Zubimendi within seconds of coming on to set up Mehmeti's goal.

Chuba Akpom (for Flemming, 61) - 6

Injected some energy. Took his stoppage-time goal well, spinning in the box before netting via the aid of a deflection.

Leif Davis (for Ouattara, 68) - 7

Teed up Akpom for Town's second, adding to his goal and assist from the weekend.

Sindre Walle Egeli (for McAteer, 69) - 5

Didn't have much chance to impact the game.
