Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted some 14 Premier League goals last season, in his first year at Leeds United. Few foresaw that tally.
He ended the 2025/26 season as the seventh-highest overall scorer, and the third-highest English goal-getter, as a result. His league total was more than the previous three seasons combined, largely helped by his ability to stay off the injury table.
After winning Premier League player of the month for December, Calvert-Lewin earned a call-up to the England squad for the first time in nearly five years in March. Ultimately, he was not chosen for the World Cup but has started this season in fine fettle.
Three goals in five Premier League games means he currently sits joint third in this season’s early scorers chart - no other Englishman has scored more. It was not a surprise to see Calvert-Lewin selected by Thomas Tuchel for the Three Lions again this autumn.
He has not had the game time he would have wanted despite being the only number nine back-up to Harry Kane, but he will nevertheless be spying a home European Championships in 2028. He will be 31 by then, with Kane due to turn 35.
There is a long time between now and then, and Tuchel’s tendency of using Jude Bellingham as a false nine over Calvert-Lewin as a replacement is perhaps ominous. Yet all Calvert-Lewin can do is continue to be consistent.
Leeds boss Daniel Farke has said as much. “It’s all about performance, all about consistency for the club and if he works further on like this he has a good chance to shine exactly in this way,” Farke said of his striker earlier this season.
Calvert-Lewin himself says the fire is still burning. He explained: “For me, I’ve always been quite intrinsically motivated to try and achieve as much as I can. To have that fire in my belly again is nice. It’s there again this season.”
At his current rate, Calvert-Lewin is on for 22 Premier League goals this season - still five behind Erling Haaland’s tally of last term, such is his relentless potency.
While the Leeds ace will be glad that his team’s second goal against Newcastle United was retrospectively awarded to him, chances of the golden boot remain remote. It would be something if he kept up the goals-per-game ratio too.
But he will have ambitions of breaking his personal tally of last season. Right now, he is 12 goals away from doing so.
