Leicester City-linked manager gives update on his future

Schreuder was said to be a target for City at the end of last month as they look for a new boss to lead them in League One.

A move for the Dutchman seemed ambitious at the time, given his success this season at Nijmegen, but it feels especially audacious now.

Nijmegen won their final Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles to finish third in the Dutch top flight, their best-ever position and one that earns them a place in the Champions League third qualifying round.

It’s not just City that Schreuder has been linked to, but Dutch giants Ajax, who finished fifth.

In any case, it seems he does not plan to go anywhere. Speaking after the weekend’s win, Schreuder said: “Everyone who has been here before says every week that we have never experienced anything like this. And then you get rewarded as well. That is so wonderful for the people, and for me personally, of course.

“(The Champions League) is going to be crazy. I will definitely be there next year. Everyone knows that I still have a contract.”

Under King Power, City have never appointed a manager who does not have coaching experience in England before, albeit the arrival of James McCarron as sporting director could change the club’s processes.

It’s now been 18 days since Gary Rowett took charge of the final match of his contract, the season-closing 1-0 win over Blackburn, and there’s been no comment yet from the club on his future nor on their manager search.

Last summer, they didn’t appoint Marti Cifuentes until the middle of pre-season. They will hope to avoid such a repeat this time, with players returning from their summer breaks at the end of June.
