Vardy fighting to feature in dramatic finale that will decide his future

Leicester Mercury · Jordan Blackwell

The Leicester City icon has scored in each of his last two matches to earn victories for Cremonese and keep them in the battle for Serie A survival.

But, according to Italian media, he is struggling with a thigh injury ahead of this weekend’s showdown.

Cremonese face Champions League hopefuls Como at home on Sunday evening and they will hope to have Vardy available, with the 39-year-old now on seven goals for the campaign.

He trained little last week because of the injury but was still able to score what proved to be the winner against Udinese.

He’s now struggling again, Italian media say, but there remains optimism that he can come through one final match.

Lecce’s last-minute winner against Sassuolo means Cremonese remain in the bottom three for the final round of fixtures, with Vardy’s side a point behind their rivals. Lecce host 14th-placed Genoa.

A win for Cremonese will keep them up if Lecce fail to claim three points. If Cremonese draw and Lecce lose, then they will be level on points. But instead of their fates being decided by goal difference, the two teams will then play each other in a play-off to decide who goes up and who stays down.

If the relegation battle goes to a play-off, it could affect Vardy’s attendance at City’s 5,000-1 anniversary match on Saturday, May 30.

But if Cremonese stay up with their result this weekend, he likely wouldn’t be able to play, as his contract renews for a second year upon survival, and that would likely prevent him from playing in any other match, even if it is for charity.
