Three Leicester City players who can change Russell Martin's thinking at Burton

Leicester City's pre-season has been an interesting one for a number of reasons so far. New boss Russell Martin is slowly getting his ideas across to his players and there have been some standout performances.

Today, the Foxes take on Burton Albion in their third friendly of the summer before they head off to Spain for two more games. In four weeks, City start their League One campaign at Notts County and the time for players to force their way into Martin's thinking is now.

So far, players have been split into two different teams and played the same amount of time. Burton's fixture, like Tuesday's at Bristol Rovers, will be played across four 30 minutes meaning players will have another chance to make them impossible to leave out.

Here, we look at three players who can either cement their spot in Leicester's strongest team or prove their point with a good outing at the Pirelli Stadium...

This is an obvious one. The academy graduate has started both games at right-back for Leicester and has looked like a strong contender. After making his senior debut in the Premier League last year, Aluko is now preparing to become City's new right-back after Ricardo Pereira's exit.

Impressing both defensively and attacking this summer, Aluko has also demonstrated his tactical awareness by coming inside and creating an overload in the central third. His off-season work has helped him physically and he appears to have improved his strength.

Against League One opposition today, Aluko will have a tougher task and it's one that he should embrace. A calm performance against better opposition will only reassure any doubts about his readiness.

Jayden Joseph is proving to be a worthy competitor and has done as good a job as Aluko when he's played. Demonstrating an ability to overcome better players, contribute to Martin's style of play and be defensively sound will be another step in the right direction for the academy star.

Skipp's time at City has been difficult for him. Costing £20m in 2024 from Tottenham, the midfielder has struggled for consistency, a good level of performance and finding his preferred role. Under Martin, that is showing early signs of changing.

Following a slow performance against Northampton, Skipp emerged from the 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers as one of the most impressive players. Playing the screening midfielder role, the 25-year-old was at ease against League Two opposition.

As the No.6, he is competing with Hamza Choudhury, Louis Page and Sammy Braybrooke. So far, we've seen him control the game, protest the defence and influence possession. He also appeared to have a good understanding of one of the No.8s to rotate on the pitch when on the ball.

His future is a topic of conversation with Middlesbrough open to signing him earlier this summer. If he stays, he could be a vital cog in Martin's set-up this season. Burton gives him an opportunity to show how he works with other players, having Will Alves and Conor Chaplin in front of him would be intriguing.

This afternoon's game is the first with Chaplin after he signed a three-year contract at the King Power Stadium. As well as the buzz of a new signing, Chaplin is a big arrival for Leicester and Martin.

Firstly, he scored 26 League One goals for Ipswich Town when he last played at this level. Despite having a quiet season for Portsmouth last term, the 29-year-old strengthens Leicester significantly.

It will be interesting to see where he is deployed and the question is where his best position is. His best spell for Ipswich came with him playing behind the striker as a roaming No.10, something that he could be permitted to do in one of the attacking midfielders.

A duo of Chaplin and Alves is an exciting thought. There's also the chance of him being given the role to lead the line as a false 9. His arrival has the potential to be a thrilling piece of business, all eyes will be on where he fits into Martin's system.

It's crunch time for Leicester City as they face a serious rebuilding process in League One. The transfer window is open and we will see players heading in and out of the King Power turnstiles.
