The ECHO has delved into its archives to bring together a collection of images celebrating Merseyside football culture. Among the highlights are remarkable images captured by ECHO photographer Colin Lane in Istanbul, where Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in football history. On May 25, 2005, Rafa Benitez’s side fought back from 3-0 down against AC Milan before winning on penalties to lift the Champions League.
The collection also features photographs taken in 1991 by photographer Richard Davis, who spent much of the season documenting football supporters from across the North West for his book Football With Attitude. His work captured the fashion, music and matchday culture surrounding fans of Liverpool, Everton and other clubs at a time when the game looked very different from today.
Davis's photographs have since featured in the Going to the Match 1991 photo zine by Lower Block, as well as a new exhibition, offering a fascinating snapshot of football culture more than three decades ago.
Alongside these collections, images courtesy of the ECHO's archive and Mirrorpix take readers even further back in time, with photographs spanning the 1950s to the 2000s. From supporters in the stands and scenes around the grounds to players on the pitch, club staff and memorable Merseyside derbies, the pictures chart the changing face of football in Liverpool and Everton across the generations.
These images celebrate the people at the heart of the game and the memories that have helped shape football on Merseyside.
