Carragher issues apology to Sky Sports viewers while delivering Jacquet verdict

But it was Jacquet, who joined the Reds from Stade Rennais in February, who caught the eye with another impressive display on the South Coast. And midway through the second half, after the centre-back made a vital interception with his side having just taken the lead, Carragher said: "Brilliant again, [from] Jacquet.

"I am getting a bit carried away with him? I don’t know and I apologise to viewers at home. He’s really impressed.

"He's young, he will have bad games and he will make mistakes, of course that is the nature of young centre-backs.

"But he has played very well and he also looks the part. You know when you just look at a player and think he looks like a centre-back, he looks like a good player.

"It doesn't always work and I certainly wouldn’t class myself as looking the part when I played."

Impressed by what he saw from his centre-back partner, Reds skipper Virgil van Dijk said: "I think he has showed a lot of good things so far this season.

"Still so young, a lot to learn and a lot to give. Let's keep it going. It's very important for us to get goals, Alexander Isak included.

"It was good win here, a clean sheet and we go to the international break before bracing ourselves for a very intense period. Hopefully [this team can be] very good. Let's all stay calm and keep working and not get ahead of ourselves.

"This was an important win at a difficult ground. We could have done a lot better but we come away with the three points and clean sheet."

While Jacquet said: "It is big for me to play with Virgil. I can learn a lot from him. I'm very happy, I play with a lot of very good players so for me I just enjoy it."
