The ex-Red may have left Anfield last summer but he still keeps up to date with his former club from afar. Araujo scored for the second time in red against Villarreal in a monumental Champions League comeback for Andoni Iraola's side.
Liverpool were trailing 2-0 to the Spanish outfit before Alexis Mac Allister and the Uruguayan defender hit back to bring the team level before halftime. The Reds eventually won 4-3 but Araujo's looping header and subsequent celebration with the home fans caught Nunez's attention.
Speaking to The Times, the defender opened up about his international colleague's reaction as he said: "I also speak to Darwin a lot. We’re great friends. He congratulated me after my goal against Villarreal the other day. He asked me if I was going to score more goals than him [at Liverpool]!"
Nunez's self-deprecating comment speaks volumes about his charact as he's able to laugh off his struggles at Anfield. The striker departed Merseyside in 2025 after scoring 40 goals and assisting 26 times in 143 appearances.
During his time in England, Nunez won the Premier League, Community Shield and Carabao Cup. He agreed a £56.6million move to Al-Hilal last summer but was omitted from the squad just months later following Karim Benzema's arrival.

Now, Nunez is on loan to newly-promoted Al-Diriyah and has scored three goals in nine Saudi Pro League appearances. Araujo has taken up the mantle of representing Uruguay in the Liverpool squad after joining on loan from Barcelona in the summer.
Since then, the centre-half has appeared 11 times and made three goal contributions. As he continues to cement himself as a fan favourite, Araujo has refused to rule out a permanent move to Anfield.
When asked about the potential to continue his career in the Premier League, the 27-year-old said: "It's too early to talk about it. I'd like to thank everyone for the support they've shown me, because this has helped me a great deal. Whether or not I stay at Liverpool is not entirely up to me."
