Semenyo admits he is 'beating himself up' after City's defeat to PSG

Manchester Evening News · Jack Flintham

Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha's goals put City on the ropes in front of their old boss Pep Guardiola. At half time, Enzo Maresca made a triple change and that had the desired effect. Within 10 minutes of the restart, City had squandered two big chances from Semenyo and Enzo Fernandez before Erling Haaland bagged his first.

City's tails were up - Semenyo hit the crossbar and Iliman Ndiaye had a couple of chances before Maghnes Akliouche hit the Blues with a suckerpunch. Semenyo then had another opportunity after PSG's fourth, but he fired into the side netting. Haaland would eventually score another, but it was only a consolation as City lost for the first time since the Community Shield.

To get it, it's a simple one-two punch.

Speaking to CBS Sports after the game, Semenyo said: "It’s quite frustrating, to be honest. I think I am beating myself up at the moment for all the chances that I missed but I think, collectively, it was just the reaction - we did so well and caused so many problems, it is just unfortunate not to score.

"We just take the positives and go again." On the quality of PSG, he added: "Yeah, they are definitely one of the best. Obviously there are Ballon d’Or candidates all around their team, but yeah, they made it very hard for us today.

"We knew what to expect, very unorthodox but credit to them, that is why they are back-to-back European champions."

As they did at Anfield on Sunday, City's fans backed their team relentlessly throughout the game and, along with the vocal PSG support, created a brilliant atmosphere at the Etihad Stadium.

On the fans, Semenyo concluded: "They were fantastic. They were with us the whole way. I can’t fault them.

"It was obviously a bit of a rollercoaster but they definitely enjoyed the game and we’re so grateful for them." City return to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday when they host Ipswich Town.

Maresca's men will then play their third game in the Champions League this season when they take on AEK Athens.
