Man City huddle speaks volumes as bold Pep Guardiola plan backfires

But it was Manchester City who were knocked off their feet as a Fede Valverde first half hat-trick leaves them down and probably out.

It wasn't just that City's Plan A failed, it was that every subsequent one went the same way. Change the system at half-time? No difference. All the players gathering for a huddle during a second-half injury break to get themselves together? Never mind. Taking the ineffective Erling Haaland off before the end? Still no goals.

Considered strong favourites going into this tie, City were brushed aside far too easily from a Real side that visibly grew in confidence over the course of the 90 minutes and will almost certainly dump the Blues out for a third consecutive year next week barring a miracle.

Guardiola, in what could be his last trip to a ground where he has been loathed for decades, picked an unusually attacking lineup as City looked to hurt a Real team that have been punched onto the ropes this season. Antoine Semenyo, Jeremy Doku, and Savinho all started in support of Erling Haaland and they quickly set about pushing and probing at a nervy Real.

But as a hungry City had their eyes fixed on the possibilities in front of them, they forgot what was behind. A simple ball from Thibaut Courtois sailed over Nico O'Reilly's head and Fede Valverde was exquisite to control and carry the ball, poke it past Gianluigi Donnarumma and place it into an empty net.

The Blues were still wondering what had happened when they allowed Vinicius to go un-tackled and when his ball deflected into Valverde's path in the box he was outstanding again to finish before Donnarumma could shift his weight across. It wasn't quite as unbelievable as the Spurs collapse in Madrid 24 hours earlier, but it still stunned City.

They eventually settled, but were suckered again on the stroke of half-time with Valverde completing an incredible 22-minute hat-trick with close control in the box to get on the end of a Brahim Diaz chip. All those nerves inside the Bernabeu at kick-off had been replaced by triumphant roars as City slumped off for the break needing a miracle.

Tijjani Reijnders was a start, with his introduction for the second half allowing City to move to a 4-3-3 system that are more familiar with. Once again though, just as City crept into enemy lines they shot themselves in the foot as a long ball put Vinicius through and when Abdukodir Khusanov could not get back Donnarumma fouled the Brazilian in the box.

The goalkeeper was carded but celebrating soon after for saving the spot kick, although City had little else to cheer on a miserable night for them that had promised so much. Guardiola had said last year that the Blues were so depleted going into the Real games the defeat had not hurt, yet this will sting.

Time can stand still in the Bernabeu and the penalty save at least means that they are not out of this tie yet. They will host Real next Tuesday and have already beaten them this season.

They will have to play so much better than this though - and before then have to win at West Ham on Saturday to avoid another setback in another competition. Bouncing into Madrid with their Quadruple dream alive after a much-changed team had beaten Newcastle at the weekend, they were instead downed by a treble.
