Man United might be in danger of making another expensive transfer mistake

A week earlier, Radek Vitek stopped to tell reporters he wanted to leave United this summer. Perhaps Amass had been advised by his camp to keep his head down and not say anything about his future.

There seems to be something bubbling away behind the scenes regarding Amass' future. The Athletic reported on Tuesday morning that Amass could leave United on a permanent transfer this summer for around £6million.

To get it, it's a simple one-two punch.

It's fair to say the youngster's future is uncertain at this stage, but United should be doing everything they can to keep him because Amass looks ready to contribute to the first team in the new campaign.

Amass is ambitious and wants to start consistently after getting a taste of regular football in the Championship. His mind may already be made up on his future. In that case, United will have no option but to cut ties. But there has been no indication from sources that Amass is pushing to leave.

That does not mean that he isn't angling for a move privately. If that were true, he would need to be convinced by United of the pathway they see for him, otherwise the club would risk losing another promising left-back.

Alvaro Fernandez saw his future at United, but he felt he had no choice but to seal a permanent move away two years ago, which led to him signing for Benfica after a six-month loan because Erik ten Hag had overlooked him.

Benfica paid €6million (£5.2m) plus €3m (£2.6m) in potential add-ons to sign Fernandez and United inserted a 15 per cent sell-on clause, along with a buy-back option, into the sale.

Just a year later, Fernandez signed for Real Madrid in a €50m (£43m) deal and supporters have been left wondering why the defender was allowed to slip through the net.

Although Fernandez hasn't set the world alight with Madrid, there is talk of Xabi Alonso wanting to sign him for Chelsea. Alonso coached Fernandez during his time in charge of Madrid, and he fits into his system.

Fernandez might not have succeeded at Old Trafford, but the bottom line is he was sold for very little when he was worth a lot more a short time after leaving.

The circumstances around the Spaniard's exit should be remembered by United when dealing with Amass this summer.
