Unseen footage of Matheus Cunha clash emerges as Man Utd star faces extra ban

Manchester Evening News · Mark Wakefield

Cunha was sent off just a few minutes after putting United into a 3-2 lead in the closing stages of the league phase fixture, with the Reds trailing 2-0 going into the half-time interval.

The Brazilian picked up a yellow card for his celebration after the winning goal, and was subsequently booked again a few minutes later for a tackle.

Cunha could be seen watching the final minutes of the match whilst sitting on an advertising board, rather than returning to the dressing room.

After the final whistle, Cunha then returned to the pitch to celebrate with his teammates, and video footage has shown the moment when Carrick spotted the playmaker and immediately started to walk towards him.

Carrick briefly spoke to Cunha and it’s believed that the United boss instructed the forward to return to the dressing room in order to avoid receiving further punishment.

Cunha was then escorted off the pitch by a member of staff and appeared to be visibly frustrated as he threw his hands up in the air.

It’s possible that Cunha could be in line to receive further punishment as a result of him not going to the dressing room following the red card.

Cunha will miss United’s next league phase match against Sporting CP on November 25 and it remains to be seen if the suspension could be extended.

Under IFAB Law 12, which covers fouls and misconduct, states that players must go either to the dressing room or a spectator area after being given a red card.

If a player were not to obey this rule, for instance, to celebrate with their teammates on the pitch following a victory, they could be in line to receive further punishment.

This could be in the form of an extended ban or the player, as well as the club, receiving a fine. However, it’s still unclear if this would apply to Cunha, with the Manchester Evening News approaching UEFA for comment.

Cunha spoke after the game about the celebration that led to him receiving his first booking of the night against Roma following his goal celebration.

“I always dreamed to have this celebration, to be honest,” Cunha told CBS Sports. “And then when I go I saw the fans and it was a little bit tricky because it was in the part of the Roma fans. And then I don’t know if it’s Roma fans or our fans, then I felt like if I jumped there it will be tricky.

“But I’m happy because they celebrated me, it was a very beautiful moment.”
