Goals from Nobel Mendy and Semi Ajayi meant that the Reds return to Premier League action was a disappointing one. Carrick insists there were "good things" in the defeat and is adamant his team will bounce back.

To get it, it's a simple one-two punch.

Now, one long-term target is set to be announced as a United player with a Spanish defender also linked to Old Trafford. Here, Manchester Evening News has the latest news coming out of Old Trafford.

Alejandro Balde is set to seek a transfer away from Barcelona this summer and has told his agent Jorge Mendes to find him a new club, according to reports. The defender was omitted from Hansi Flick's squad to face Elche on Sunday and Balde is reported to be 'most excited' by a move to United.

Transfermarkt values Balde at around £43m and he could be the next face through the door at Old Trafford should the club firm up their reported interest in signing him.

United have finally secured Brighton's Carlos Baleba for a fee of £70m in total. The club finally advanced in talks last week with Baleba being sent for a medical at the weekend ahead of his signing.

Brighton will be paid an initial £65m with a potential £5m in bonuses included. A sell-on clause has also been included in Baleba's contract.

United first looked at the 22-year-old last summer but the Seagulls wouldn't part with Baleba for any less than £100m. Now, Carrick has saved the club £35m and brought the long-term target to Old Trafford.
