Michael Carrick 'wants to be sacked' as Jamie Carragher destroys Man United boss

Manchester Evening News · Ben Crawford

United headed into Sunday's game against the Cherries winless in seven but found themselves outplayed in the early exchanges. Seven minutes before half-time, Rayan fired the visitors into the lead and five minutes later, Marcus Tavernier doubled their advantage.

An error from Senne Lammens gifted Evanilson the chance to make it 3-0 in the 71st minute and he obliged, sealing United's fate and piling endless pressure on manager Carrick, who had decided to bench captain Bruno Fernandes for the entire game. The Portuguese had spoken out against his boss in the week, questioning tactical choices after a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

Fans made their feelings clear at full-time at Old Trafford and Carrick was applauded, but it seems the writing may be on the wall where his sacking is concerned. And Sky Sports pundit Carragher thinks Carrick himself wants to depart as soon as possible.

To get it, it's a simple one-two punch.

"Can you imagine going into the training ground tomorrow and facing Bruno Fernandes after not bringing him on in that situation? It's a rancid dressing room.

"He doesn't want to be involved in that. He wants to be put out of his misery tonight."

On Fernandes, Carragher said: "I don't think he was ever going to bring him on. It was a deliberate decision to leave him on the bench to try and almost embarrass him."

Carrick was rather diplomatic when speaking after the 3-0 loss. He said: "It's really difficult to have a day like this at this football club and feel the emotion and dynamics of what it was like today.

"Not for me personally, but for Manchester United. It was really mixed. I feel responsible for the position I'm in. I've been at the club a long time. It hurts a lot going through this.

"It was a strange mix of emotions at the end of the game. It wasn't a nice way to end the game. It was a tough day for the players. We went into the game having been rocked.

"You can feel that. They're really hurting and disappointed in there. It's not a nice feeling. You have to accept it, we're in that situation."
