An initial repair in 2009 to a stress fracture to the standing leg appeared to have resolved the issue, but in 2016 a fresh crack appeared in the same leg. Further work to strengthen and support the base of the figure provided a temporary solution, but further treatment became unavoidable.
Contractors removed the statue on Tuesday, May 19. Middlesbrough Council said it was necessary to cut the figure away just above the ankle when attempts to lift the structure on its base proved unsuccessful.
The parts of the statue will be joined together again by specialist repairers and will be returned to the park with a new foundation block. The work is expected to take between six and eight weeks.
The seven-foot bronze figurine was unveiled in a high-profile launch at the park on May 16, 2007, near Cloughie's family home on Valley Road. Created by artist Vivien Mallock, it depicts a young Clough walking through the park on his way to Ayresome Park where he scored 197 goals in 213 appearances for Middlesbrough.
He was regarded as one of the most clinical forwards of his generation. Starting his managerial career at Hartlepool in 1965, he went on to win the European Cup twice - in successive seasons - as manager of Nottingham Forest.
For many supporters, the statue remains a familiar landmark, regularly passed by Middlesbrough fans on their way to matches at the Riverside Stadium. Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: "Brian Clough is a giant figure in the town’s history, and the Albert Park statue is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest players and managers ever to grace the beautiful game.
"We’re hopeful the current repair will provide a long-term solution, and that Cloughie can once again be enjoyed by visitors to Albert Park for generations to come."
Last month, Sir Geoffrey Boycott, a close friend of Middlesbrough FC icon Brian Clough called for the bronze statue of his pal to be restored to its former glory following a visit.
