Ramsdale's run in the team comes to an end for the first time in three months as Nick Pope is restored between the posts. Pope has not played since dropping a clanger in the 3-2 defeat against Everton at St James' Park earlier this year.
Ramsdale has been deemed at fault for a number of recent goals with Howe now satisfied England international Pope has recovered from his error against the Toffees.
Howe named Lewis Miley at right-back and opted against starting Kieran Trippier with Tino Livramento injured. With Anthony Gordon also absent - due to a hip injury - Howe instead recalled Joe Willock against his old club.

Willock looks likely to play on the left-hand side of a three-pronged attack with Jacob Murphy and William Osula alongside him. Bruno Guimaraes is back in midfield as captain and Dan Burn is restored to the defence with Lewis Hall also axed.
Howe had said before the game: "I think it's definitely an opportunity for us because I think the next game's always an opportunity to, whatever moment you're in, to prove yourselves all over again, most importantly to ourselves.
"We owe it to everyone connected to the club, to ourselves, to commit everything that we have to try and get a result. As we did, you know, very recently at Chelsea, and I think we took a lot from that game in terms of our attitude and how we played the endeavour, the spirit we showed, the togetherness we showed.-
"That was only a few games ago, very, very recently. So when you're in a difficult run, it can seem like you've been in that for a long, long period of time, and probably with the international break and the big length of gap we had between games, it's felt that way for us."
Once again Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa were overlooked as starters and had to be content with a place on the bench.
