The Magpies have impressed in this season's competition, earning their place among the elite after beating Qarabag in the play-offs, after a strong showing in the league stage. Newcastle have a few injury concerns, with Joelinton and Anthony Gordon expected to have shaken off knocks, while Howe must make a call whether Tino Livramento is fit to start after returning from a hamstring injury.
Barcelona arrive on Tyneside top of La Liga, but manager Hansi Flick is without key midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Gavi, while Marcus Rashford is also an injury doubt.
We've got all the build up to the big game, team news, match updates and all the reaction, ratings and analysis on the final whistle.
And that is literally the last kick of the game. It sparked wild scenes on the Barcelona bench and that spoke volumes for how lucky they felt to escape defeat on Tyneside. That feels so cruel for Newcastle who were the better team throughout the game. The positive is that they are still well in the tie heading to the Camp Nou and know they can hurt Barcelona. But that feels like a real gut punch psychologically to concede in that manner.
Comments21:52KEY EVENTGOAL! Newcastle 1-1 BarcelonaThat is gut-wrenching. Yamal fires home, sending Ramsdale the wrong way.
Comments21:51Sean McCormickPenalty to BarcelonaOh no! Potential heartbreak for Newcastle. Penalty to Barcelona as Malick Thiaw is adjudged to ahve fouled Dani Olmo.
Comments90 minsSean McCormickJoe Willock bookedThe Newcastle midfielder stopped a dangerous break away and has picked up a booking.
Comments90 minsSean McCormickFour minutes of stoppage timeCan Newcastle hold on? Or can they even add to their lead?
Comments89 minsSean McCormickNewcastle substitutionAnd what an ovation for goalscorer, Harvey Barnes. He may just have scored one of the most famous goals this stadium has ever seen. He is replaced by Joe Willock.
Comments87 minsSean McCormickDouble Barcelona changeFerran Torres and Xavi Espart replace Fermin Lope and Ronald Araujo.
Comments21:43KEY EVENTGOAL!!!!!!!! Newcastle 1-0 BarcelonaYESSSSS!!!!!! The roof has come off St James' Park as Harvey Barnes gives Newcastle a much deserved lead. Brilliant work from Jacob Murphy and Jacob Ramsey as their one-two fed in Murphy on the right hand side and his brilliant cross was fired home by Barnes, despite Garcia getting a hand to it. Wow. What a noise!
Comments83 minsSean McCormickRashford causes problemsWith Newcastle pushing high for a winner, Barcelona were able to get Rashford in one v one with Malick Thiaw, he cut inside but his shot was blocked. Just a reminder of the danger Barcelona pose.
Comments21:39Ross GregoryTime to really gamble?Do NUFC need to push for the win here? How do they play the last 10 minutes or so - go heavy for the goal or be compact?
Going into the Nou Camp 0-0 isn't the worst result in the world but you feel they need a win.
Comments74 minsSean McCormickNewcastle goal disallowedWhat a breakaway. Livramento played Gordon in behind and his cutback found Jacob Murphy. Murphy teed up Harvey Barnes and his effort cannoned back off the post and was headed home by Joelinton. However, the linesman flagged for offside. The goal was disallowed but the belief is flowing through St James' Park.
Comments73 minsSean McCormickBarcelona changeMarc Bernal is replaced in midfield by Marc Casado.
Comments69 minsSean McCormickDouble change for BarcelonaMarcus Rashford, who scored twice in this fixture in September and Dani Olmo replace Robert Lewandowski and Pedri. Raphinha has moved up front, with Rashford taking up the left-wing.
Comments68 minsSean McCormickMurphy blazes overWhat a chance. Lewis Hall's cross from the left-hand side looked perfect for Jacob Murphy but his left-footed volley ballooned over the crossbar.
Comments67 minsSean McCormickYellow card for CanceloPerhaps trying to make his mark on his new foe, after being torn to shreds by Elanga, Cancelo steamed into a challenge on Murphy who calmly moved the ball to the side and took the full impact of his foul. Yellow card for the left-back who is struggling.
Comments66 minsSean McCormickTriple changeKieran Trippier, Will Osula and Anthony Elanga are replaced by Tino Livramento, Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon. Not sure Elanga was the change to make there given how much success he was having against Cancelo...
Comments66 minsSean McCormickLewandowski spurns huge chanceThere's your warning shot, Newcastle. Raphinha's cross was met by Lewandowski but he somehow missed the target from close range.
Comments65 minsSean McCormickTonali effort blockedThe belief is palpable inside St James' Park and this time Sandro Tonali sees a shot blocked to provoke a huge reaction from the crowd.
Comments64 minsSean McCormickGamble on Gordon?Elanga is causing so much damage down the right hand side but his crosses have not been converted as yet. Could Anthony Gordon provide that cutting edge? He is warming up and if there is any chance he can play apart amid illness then it is a gamble worth taking.
Comments21:16Lee RyderWarm upsWoltemade and Gordon are among those warming up. It feels like something different is needed to unlock Barca here.
Comments58 minsSean McCormickBarnes tests GarciaBarnes did well to come inside Araujo but his shot was scooped comfortably by Garcia. it's all Newcastle.
Comments56 minsSean McCormickGarcia intercepts dangerous crossElanga is making a mockery of Joao Cancelo. He skipped past him with ease and as he tried to find Harvey Barnes at the back post for a certain goal, Joan Garcia read the cross and pounced on the ball before it could find him.
Comments55 minsSean McCormickOsula blazes overNewcastle break forward in double quick time as Ramsdale cut out a dangerous Barcelona attack, released Hall quickly and his ball played through Osula on the left hand side of the penalty area but he wildly blazed his effort high and wide of Garcia's near post.
Comments21:10Lee RyderThe crowd trying to get Newcastle over the line here It's still very tight out there. Newcastle battling hard but have not had a breakthrough yet.
The crowd getting right behind the lads though. We're six minutes shy of the hour mark.
Comments49 minsSean McCormickNewcastle start the second half like they started the firstNewcastle are full of energy again at the start of the half and after Elanga won a free-kick, Trippier's delivery was cleared into his path but he sliced his volley wide of goal. Newcastle fans are appreciating the intensity, though, and are in fine voice.
Comments21:01KEY EVENTSecond half under waySandro Tonali gets the second half under way with Newcastle attacking the Gallowgate End second half. Can they take a lead to the second leg in the Camp Nou? We're about to find out.
Comments21:00Sean McCormickTeams re-emerge for the second halfNewcastle made Barcelona players wait for a brief moment but both teams are back on the pitch and kick-off is just moments away.
Comments20:47Sean McCormickHALF-TIME: Newcastle 0-0 BarcelonaIt remains goalless but Newcastle can be very happy with their first half efforts. Anthony Elanga has caused Barcelona's high line all sorts of problems, Newcastle just need to be more clinical while they are on top.
It remains finely poised as we head into the break.
Comments20:46Lee RyderFirst half ratings Here's how I'm calling it so far.
Aaron Ramsdale 7
Has been on edge as expected but has coped well enough.
Kieran Trippier 7
Keeping it simple but looks like he has picked up a knock with Livramento on standby.
Comfortable enough in possession.
Endured one scary moment in which he almost diverted past Ramsdale. A bit shaky.
Solid and sturdy. Important nick to deny Yamal.
Sandro Tonali 6
On a booking after pulling back Raphinha and having issues with the Italian referee Marco Guida.
A couple of half decent breaks.
Harvey Barnes 6
Yet to really come to life.
Anthony Elanga 6
Has had a couple of openings but did not make the most of a break down the right wing when he forced Garcia into a save. Sent another from range straight at the keeper.
A couple of glimpses. Plenty of hard work but needs to be clinical when given the chance. A big miss after Elanga cross.
Comments45 minsSean McCormickOne minute of stoppage timeCan either team take the lead before the interval?
