No City windfall for Buendia

Eastern Daily Press · By Connor Southwell

Norwich City won't get a windfall for Emi Buendia's Europa League success with Aston Villa, with the Argentine playing a starring role in their 3-0 win over Freiburg.

The Canaries watched on with pride as Buendia curled in a magical goal from outside the box before teeing up Morgan Rogers to seal the victory in Istanbul and lead Villa to their first major trophy this century.

City sold Buendia for a record £33million after promotion to the Premier League in 2021, and marked his 150th appearance for the club in the final.

As part of that deal, Norwich included plenty of bonuses and clauses - but winning the Europa League wasn't part of the agreement. Plenty of supporters watched on in support of the attacking midfielder, who has returned from an ACL injury to play a starring role in Emery's side.

The goal means Buendia has netted in the quarter-final, semi-final and final of Villa's run to the trophy. They are preparing for a parade in Birmingham on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking after lifting the trophy, Buendia expressed his pride at making history for the club.

"No words, obviously," Buendia said, speaking to Villa's official channels. "Firstly seeing the face of our fans, but also having my family and friends here was special but when you listen to our fans talking about this and they could share this night with us today in the stadium and we made them proud of this football club.

"That is something amazing. We will have this forever as a memory, as experience and I'm really pleased with all we create tonight because it will be in the history of this club.

"Obviously during the season you can see or people talk about favourites or something but the way we work, the way we prepare every single match, respecting every opponent is amazing. So huge credit for everyone and now we have to enjoy this."
