MLS option for Marcondes after City cut?

Emi Marcondes is reportedly training with MLS club San Diego after his Norwich City release.

The experienced attacking midfielder was one of a small group of senior players not offered new Carrow Road deals at the end of last season.

Marcondes was linked with Greek Super League side Kalamata earlier this summer and could have departed for Bundesliga 2 in January 2026 after falling down the pecking order under Philippe Clement .

San Diego have links to the ‘Right to Dream’ ownership group, who run Danish Super Liga club FC Nordsjælland, where Marcondes started his senior career.

Marcondes spoke about the potential to join San Diego in a Tipsbladet interview in March 2026.

“Well, it's certainly not something I'm against, and I also follow their matches a lot,” he said. “I think the way they do things in San Diego and Right to Dream is amazing and I admire it a lot and I've always kept in touch with the people and players who have been at the club because it really means something to me.

“Marcus (Ingvartsen, former team mate and now San Diego player) and I still talk to each other, also about things other than football. He talks really well about it, so it would be cool to try if it became relevant.”

San Diego are 12th in the 15-team Western Conference in the early rounds of the MLS, which paused for the World Cup. Their MLS campaign resumes next Thursday against Colorado.

Marcondes made 17 appearances for City last season, but the final one came in a 2-0 defeat to Stoke in early January.

The former Brentford and Bournemouth promotion winner opened up on his final months at Carrow Road under Clement following a summer exit in an interview with Talk Norwich City .

“The players that were playing and their characteristics suited his style,” he said. “I came in, I think, for the second game and started the third and fourth, just running a lot and fighting, and I think that was the direction he wanted.

“We had running tests and different gym tests as well, so there was a clear way of doing things. It was probably the biggest change for everyone. It felt like the train was going and you could jump on or be left behind, and I think everyone understood that.

“Then January came and I only had six months left on my contract. The club were quite clear they wouldn’t extend it, and we had good conversations about it. I understood the direction. They also wanted to bring in new players in my position during the window, so I was told I wasn’t the priority."
