Glasner has his say on VAR controversy in Nottingham Forest draw with Ipswich

Nottingham Post · Sarah Clapson

Nottingham Forest head coach Oliver Glasner felt Ipswich Town should have been reduced to 10 men during the 1-1 draw between the two teams at Portman Road.

The Reds brought an end to a three-match losing run as they claimed a point in Suffolk. Neco Williams had opened the scoring for the visitors but they were punished for not putting the game to bed when Julio Enciso capitalised on a mistake by Nikola Milenkovic.

There was a moment of controversy at the start of the second half when referee Thomas Bramall was sent to his screen following an intervention by VAR. The official had initially waved play on after Issa Diop had brought down James McAtee but an on-field review was recommended over a potential red card for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

Bramall decided to book Diop and awarded a free-kick to Forest as he felt McAtee had knocked the ball away from goal. Glasner approved of the review process but felt it should have resulted in a sending off.

“I think it was a red card,” he said. “On the other side, I think we couldn't have played a more dominant second half than we did. But I think it was a red card, yes.

“When you run straight to the goal and you have the ball between your legs, it's very difficult to get a finish. We're telling our players that sometimes you need to create an angle and go half right, half left because then it makes the finish easier and also the goalkeeper has to move. Then you have the near and the far post open or one corner open.

“I think Macca prepared the finish already because on the left side it was Diop. That's why he needed to go there. But again, the referee decided it that way and we have to accept it.

"Not to blame the referee, we will keep analysing, and practising. Maybe I am wrong or I don't know if the referee was a former football player. He won't change it anymore, so we accept it."

The Austrian was pleased with his team’s performance, even if they did not get the win to go with it. He said: “The first thing I learned in the Premier League is to respect the point, especially away from home.

“The result doesn’t reflect the performance. But I don’t know a different solution than just keep going, because everyone feels we are on the right track.”
