Stephan signs new QPR contract - West London Sport

QPR head coach Julien Stephan has signed a new contract, the club have announced.

The 45-year-old Frenchman was appointed last summer on a two-year deal and Rangers finished 15th in the Championship in his first season in the job.

He has been given a contract extension ahead of the new campaign and told the club website: “It feels natural to continue – there is a great feeling between myself and the club.”

Stephan had two spells in charge of his hometown team Rennes before he arrived in west London, leading them to the French Cup in 2019 – the club’s first trophy for 48 years. He also had a spell at Strasbourg.

His first year at QPR was a difficult one, with injuries to key players a recurring problem, and the campaign ended with four consecutive defeats.

“It was a season with a lot of ups and downs,” Stephan told BBC Radio London in April.

“It was a strong experience and it’s really important now to think about the future.

“It’s a good project, good fans, good management, good mentality into the dressing room, so we have some good foundations.”

If I’m proven wrong, I’ll accept it, but I believe that Stephan was a mistake & should have been released after the 1st season. More losses, more goals against & that added to bigger losses throughout the season too. He got rid of an experienced midfielder that not only knew the league,but also the club & players, to then ask for more experience to be signed. He said it was good that we stayed clear of relegation, but that shouldn’t have been our target, as when you go back for a few seasons, the only reason we were in relegation battles was because the managers had no idea at this level. People seemingly forget that we were bottom & adrift under Ainsworth because of his tactics only, but when Cifuentes came in & moved the team further upfield, we started to win & moved out of the relegation zone as we should have always been. We aren’t 1 of the worst 3 in the league which is why we don’t go down, but we aren’t anywhere near good enough to go up either. Sadly, people will think with different keepers in place that we’ll suddenly be pushing for a play-off position, but A much better keeper still leaks goals with this defence in front of them.
