Stoke City and Ireland strike Bosun Lawal truce

Bosun Lawal is expected to continue to do his rehab work at Stoke City in a thawing of tensions with Republic of Ireland, The Sentinel understands.

Stoke had been angered when Lawal was called up for international duty in the spring when not fully fit, having struggled with sustaining his comebacks from hamstring injuries through the season. His availability record was not great when he returned.

It seemed like history repeating itself when he was summoned again for Nations League fixtures this month while he was still on the way back from another hamstring problem.

But Stoke and Ireland have liaised about how he should be handled and it is believed he will continue to work with Stoke’s medical team at Clayton Wood before going to meet up with Ireland for the second half of the programme.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson sees Lawal, aged 23, as major player in his team building up to the 2028 European Championships, which will be partly hosted in Dublin.

He told Irish media: "I should have mentioned it before; he is injured at the moment,

“But we rate him that highly, we still want him in the camp, being with us and around us.

“I don't expect him to play much, but we are in collaboration with Stoke City, just to see how much we can do.

“Hopefully he can take some part in the end of this camp. But we rate him that highly that we think it is necessary for him to be around the squad.”
