Stoke City confirm transfer as deal sanctioned

Stoke City goalkeeper True Grant has joined National League side Halifax on loan.

The former England under-19 international stopper has penned a season-long deal with the Shaymen and could feature in their friendly against Gainsborough Trinity tonight.

The move will reunite Grant with Shaymen boss John McGrath with the pair having worked together previously at Buxton when the teenager was playing for Manchester City.

Buxton reached the National League North play-offs and McGrath, now in charge at the Shay, will hope they can enjoy similar success as they look to achieve their long-term ambition of a return to the Football League.

Stoke will see the move as a good opportunity for Grant to develop after he joined the club from former Premier League champions City last year.

The 20-year-old, who helped Manchester City win the FA Youth Cup in 2024 and is the son of former Stoke player of the year Lee Grant, signed a three-year deal.

Keeper coach Darren Behcet was keen to bring him in to join the goalkeeping department.

Grant started out in Derby County's academy but moved to Man City in 2018 when Grant Sr signed for Man Utd. He had trials with both Manchester clubs at the age of 12 and was left to decide which to choose.

During his time at City, he was on the bench for Pep Guardiola in a Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade.

Speaking previously about Grant, sporting director Jon Walters said: "True has shown his quality at Manchester City and during his loan spell at Buxton, and he is regarded as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in the country.

“Darren Behcet was keen to bring him in as part of a strong goalkeeping unit with Viktor Johansson, Jack Bonham and Frank Fielding, with Tommy Simkin also excelling whilst out on loan.

“His dad, Lee, was a hugely respected player here and a fantastic person too. We’re delighted to welcome True into the Stoke City family, and I’m sure he knows what it means to wear the badge.”
