Newcastle transfer news LIVE: Hugo Larsson 'talks' and Bruno to Arsenal twist
It comes despite United making a stunning swoop to sign Ajax midfielder Sean Steur as they incoming business ramps up. Having finally made a major breakthrough after they announced the £42m signing of Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim, the move for Steur has taken the market by surprise.
It continues the policy of hunting for some of the best young players in Europe. Toure joins young goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims and Steur would be another exciting capture, the 18-year-old deemed Dutch football's golden boy.
Howe still wants another new goalkeeper, full-back, midfielder and potentially a forward - but are also fighting off interest from Arsenal for captain Bruno Guimaraes.

As part of the sanctions following that breach, United are now in a settlement period, which means they must report to UEFA in 2026, 2027, and 2028. United will face further penalties if they have more than a €5m deficit in year one of the agreement.
They must break even with their financial figures in 2027/28 and if Newcastle demonstrate aggregate compliance by 2027 they will get an "early exit" from the sanctions.

CommentsRoss Gregory16th Jul14:54 BSTNewcastle 'in talks' to sign Brighton goalkeeperAccording to the Mail Online, Newcastle are in discussions with both Brighton to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, as well as Manchester City to sign James Trafford.
The idea is that the Magpies will sign one of them to compete with Ewen Jaouen to be the club's number one goalkeeper.
Rushworth spent last season on loan with Coventry City and helped them win promotion to the Premier League. He has returned to Brighton this summer and the Sky Blues have had two bids rejected for him.
The 25-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and Brighton need to either decide to give him a chance to compete with Bart Verbruggen and Jason Steele, or sell him this summer - particularly given they also have England under-21 international goalkeeper James Beadle on their books, too.
Trafford remains Newcastle's dream target but would be a much more expensive deal to complete than it would be to sign Rushworth.
That is the frank view of former Newcastle winger Chris Waddle, who believes United should not keep players who no longer want to be at the football club.
"I'm looking at the players Newcastle are linked with, particularly the younger ones," Waddle told OLBG. "It seems they're shifting towards a younger recruitment strategy, focusing on developing talent to sell on, much like Tottenham has done over the years.
"Many of the players they've been linked with are quite young and unproven. They could turn out to be top players, or they might not. The players you read about and who they are linked with show they are going down that younger, high-potential avenue.
"But if Guimaraes has asked for a transfer, Newcastle are likely thinking, 'We can cash in.' But if he has asked for a transfer, they shouldn’t have to pay his wages.

"I was very pleased," Schar told Newcastle's official website when asked about renewing his contract at St James' Park.
"I don't have to say what the club means to me; it was always my first choice to stay here. I'm glad we found an agreement and it was good to get it done early.
"It's been a difficult time after my injury and what happened with my foot. I was glad I could really focus on coming back and knowing what's going to happen this year, being ready for day one.
"The last six months after my injury were the hardest of my career. I had to go through a lot and it was hard so I'm feeling a lot better now.
"There was unfinished business. I had a big setback with surgery which wasn't planned. I was close to coming back earlier and then had an infection which was tough. I felt gutted for it to end like that but I feel I am still able to add something to the team.
"I worked really hard and I'm ready to go. Hopefully, I can try to enjoy this next season.
"I'm going to need some time to adapt after being out for such a long period but I feel confident in my body and myself. I'm going to use this pre-season to come back as strongly as possible."

And in footage released by Newcastle United's media team of Steur's first day training with his new team-mates, he was seen given a speech addressing himself to his new team-mates.
He looked comfortable with the ball at both feet and adept at taking the ball in tight spaces, and even sold Lewis Hall a dummy by dropping his shoulder and moving past the left-back in a different direction.
But it was a pass he played to Jacob Murphy in a small-sided game that really caught the eye. Receiving the ball from Joelinton, his incisive pass into the penalty area split the defence to find Murphy who cut the ball back to Matheos Ferreira to score past Ewen Jaouen.
Murphy instantly turned to Steur to show his appreciation, shouting: "Sean, Sean," before clenching his fists in his direction. It was the type of pass we will hopefully see more of this season.
After all, Dutch football expert Michael Bell, editor of Football Oranje, told Chronicle Live last week that Steur is 'a technically brilliant midfielder, who can play deeper or in the eight. He is comfortable receiving the ball in tight spaces and can progress it through dribbling forward. He has a real eye for a pass'.
After his team won a small sided game and had their photo taken to celebrate, Harvey Barnes also went out of his way to congratulate the new boy.
"Start as you mean to go on, eh?" Barnes said to Steur, before then saying to the rest of the group: "First game, first photo for Sean. Love it."

White, who joined the club's academy in 2016, made four appearances for Newcastle's first team under Eddie Howe during the 2023/24 season but he has never managed to fully establish himself in the first team squad.
He spent last season on loan in League One, with spells at both Leyton Orient and Bradford City, but failed to really make inroads at either club.
But the 23-year-old did enjoy a previous successful loan spell with Crewe in the first half of that 2023/24 season, scoring three goals in 25 appearances, before returning to Tyneside.
He also enjoyed loan spells with MK Dons, Exeter City and Hartlepool United during his time with the Magpies and he will now hook up with Lee Bell's side who finished 11th in League Two last season.
White is expected to go straight into the Alex squad to face Stoke City in a pre-season friendly on Saturday and a Newcastle club statement read: "Everybody at Newcastle United would like to wish Joe well for the future."

He spent time staging a moment away from his team-mates as he tried to process what had just unfolded in the US.
Burn's entry came with just eight minutes left, as he replaced Declan Rice, but slack defending from a couple of England team-mates with five minutes left allowed Enzo Fernandez to sweep home.
Lautaro Martinez's header broke hearts in the 92nd minute and while Burn was then hurled forward as an emergency striker.
Unfortunately, there would be no Roy of the Rovers type ending as Argentina fought ferociously in the final stages, and as tough as it was to take, they probably showed more grit to win it.
Burn has been brilliant in this tournament and should be proud of his rise, but this was a moment that would leave everybody in an English shirt utterly choked.
Burn's head should be held high as he joins an elite bunch of players to have appeared in a World Cup semi-final.

Tuchel has been widely criticised for his decision to shut up shop after England took a 1-0 lead over Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, inviting pressure that ultimately led to a 2-1 defeat in Atlanta.
The German is said to retain the backing of the FA but the pressure on him is now set to become huge after such a capitulation in such a huge game.
As such, the bookies have started a market for his successor and while the odds expect Tuchel to stay, Howe has been made favourite with Betfair if a replacement is sought.
