New Swansea City faces you could be seeing a lot more of next season

Wales Online · Tom Coleman

Swansea City are facing up to a potentially busy summer, albeit not quite to the same extent as previous years.

The club have already secured a deal for centre-back Stephen Welsh, who will join on July 1 following his release from Scottish giants Celtic, and there will surely be more to follow over the coming weeks.

Vitor Matos also already stressed there won't be as many sweeping changes to his squad as previous summers, and has also admitted that a first full pre-season could well be crucial in further getting his message across to his players.

But new faces will undoubtedly be a part of the club's upcoming pre-season training camp in Austria, not just due to incomings, but there are also a few youngsters that are firmly knocking on the door, either for a breakthrough or for further inclusion in the first team picture next season.

There's already something of a clamour for him to be given a chance in the Swans backline next season following a superb season on loan at Scottish side Falkirk.

The 21-year-old can play anywhere across the back four, and was arguably one of the best defenders in the league last season.

Such has been the standard of his exploits, there have already been whispers that Celtic may come knocking at some point, although Matos has already confirmed he plans to have a closer look at him over the coming weeks.

"Next season he will be with us 100% so let's see how it goes in pre-season," the Swans boss said towards the end of the season.

"We are really happy that he will be with us in that time."

The winger has seen his development stutter a little since making his first-team breakthrough under Russell Martin.

However, after spending the season on loan at Dundee last season, there's a feeling he could now be ready to knock on the door of the senior side once more.

It's already been a fairly strong summer for the 22-year-old, who made his Wales debut in the last international break, impressing boss Craig Bellamy.

“I watched him a bit at Dundee, and I liked him," Bellamy said. "There were bits you want to see a little bit more of. As much as you can watch from afar, when you really get to see him closely he’s really been impressive.

"He’s the type of winger I really like. He’s aggressive. He wants to commit full-backs. Top left foot. I’ve been really impressed by him and he’s definitely deserved this call-up.

"Good kid, handles himself well, speaks well. He’s got all the makings that I’d say a Welsh player should have, so I’ve been really impressed by him.”

His stint at Falkirk has probably been a little overshadowed by the exploits of Lissah, but the 21-year-old winger has also enjoyed a fairly constructive loan spell.

The 21-year-old winger's stunning strike against Celtic was a particular highlight, in a stint that saw him rack up three goals and one assist in 32 appearances.

“It has been amazing for me,” Wilson said when talking about his loan. “It has been my first full season in men's football and the gaffer has given me so many opportunities on some of the biggest stages. I have played in a place like this, which won't be topped by many. I have learned a lot and I am still learning. I am really grateful for this loan period.”

A player most of us will already know fairly well.

The right-back saw a promising run to the end of last season brought to a frustratingly premature end due to injury, but will be fit for the pre-season campaign.

The 19-year-old has a potentially bright future ahead of him, and will surely comfortably overtake his tally of four league appearances last term over the course of the coming campaign.

"I am really happy with Sam," said Swansea boss Matos.

"Clearly he is someone who everyone relies on now, which is really good for a 19-year-old who made his debut and then had a massive injury and took a proper knock.

"We are all really happy for him - everyone likes him a lot. I think he is taking steps and steps, really good steps. Hopefully he will have a brilliant career with us."

The attacking midfielder was one of the most important players in a Newport County side that battled its way to League Two survival last term, and earned eight goal contributions from 42 appearances.

He's been keeping a keen eye on matters back in Swansea, mind.

“I keep in contact with Swansea a lot, and I still watch all their games when I can," he said back in February. "They’re doing really well and playing a good brand of football, and they’re happy with how things are going."

From running through shooting drills with Snoop Dogg, to making his first-team debut at his boyhood club.

It was quite a season for the 19-year-old forward, who will no doubt be eyeing more success over the coming campaign.

Woodward also signed a deal through to 2029 before the close of the campaign, and has already earned praise from Matos.

Speaking after Woodward's debut in the 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic, which saw him rack up an assist on the day, Matos said: "He came on and he had an impact straight away - running on the line, crossing, trying to be involved in the box.

"I like Woody a lot. He has a lot of potential, a lot of talent and he's a really wonderful kid. So it was really nice to see, of course."
