West Brom safety back in doubt after points deduction

Watford Observer · By Adam Drury

Championship rivals West Brom are not yet safe from relegation, having been handed a two-point deduction just three days after beating Watford 3-0.

The EFL have handed the Baggies the punishment after finding them guilty of breaching financial rules, meaning they now sit six points above the relegation zone with two games to play.

James Morrison's side hammered the Hornets on Tuesday night and thought they were celebrating guaranteed survival from Championship relegation when results went their way on Wednesday.

Contesting the decision, the club said: "West Bromwich Albion has a right of appeal and is considering its options. The Club will provide further comment once it has received the written reasons."

They host Ipswich Town on Saturday and then take on Sheffield Wednesday on the final day, needing one more point to re-assume their status as a 2026/27 Championship side.

Oxford United are the only team who could still catch West Brom, needing to win both of their final two matches and hope either the Baggies or Charlton Athletic lose both to keep their hopes alive.
