The Baggies are currently two points clear of the bottom three, with five points separating them from Leicester City in 23rd place and just two from Oxford United in 22nd. Reports this week suggested West Brom could be docked points for allegedly breaching profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
According to The Telegraph, the club has been charged with exceeding the permitted threshold during the three-year period ending in the 2024/25 campaign. West Brom have responded with a statement insisting they are in full compliance with EFL regulations.

Should the charge stand, a points deduction may be on the table. Leicester were themselves hit with a six-point penalty earlier this term after being found guilty of a breach, with a recent appeal from both the club and the Premier League proving unsuccessful.
EFL regulations dictate that any sanction must be applied during the season in which charges are brought, though with only three weeks left in the campaign, time is rapidly running out.
Any punishment dealt to West Brom this season would be a significant blow to the Baggies' survival hopes. While the standard penalty for a PSR breach stands at 12 points, the BBC reports this can be adjusted depending on the seriousness of the offence.
For breaches under £2 million, clubs face a three-point penalty. Breaches ranging from £2m to £4m come with a four-point punishment, with sanctions escalating in line with the severity of the breach.
Similar to Leicester's case, mitigation applies where a club demonstrates year-on-year reductions in losses. This looks to be the case at The Hawthorns, with one point likely to be added back.
While precise figures regarding the potential breach remain undisclosed, the Telegraph characterised it as 'small', suggesting any deduction could be modest. Nevertheless, even a minor penalty would bring West Brom closer to the bottom three.
The timing of the alleged charge has sparked controversy, arriving during the closing stages of a fierce relegation scrap involving five sides. While Sheffield Wednesday are already relegated, the battle to avoid the drop continues between Leicester, Oxford, Portsmouth, West Brom and Blackburn Rovers.
TalkSPORT's Ally McCoist remarked: "It's amazing. The ramifications of the timing of the potential points deduction are equally as important as anything in this scenario, judging by where the club is and the other clubs around them are.
"It's an absolutely unbelievable scenario to be in at this moment in time."
Co-presenter Jeff Stelling then outlined potential complications should any sanction be delayed beyond this campaign.
"It becomes horribly, horribly messy if it rolls into next season," he said.
"Then, of course, if there is a points deduction, I don't know if they'll be open to some sort of comebacks from the sides who have been relegated."
West Brom return to the pitch on Saturday with an away fixture against Preston North End at Deepdale (3pm). Just a few hours earlier, there is a crucial game between two of the Baggies' relegation rivals, Portsmouth and Leicester, at Fratton Park (12.30pm).
