Wycombe Wanderers: Michael Duff sacked by League One club

Wycombe Wanderers have sacked manager Michael Duff following a five-game winless start to the League One season.

First-team coach Alex Morris has also left in the wake of the Buckinghamshire side having picked up just three points out of a possible 15.

Tom Hounsell will take on the role as interim head coach for Saturday's trip to Leyton Orient.

Former Cheltenham Town, Barnsley, Swansea City and Huddersfield boss Duff, 48, had been in charge almost a year after replacing Michael Dodds on 18 September 2025, having made a similarly poor start to last season.

Wycombe recovered to finish in the top half and, although they have only actually lost twice this time round in the league, it has not stopped Duff becoming this season's first managerial casualty in the top four divisions.

"The club has made the decision in light of a disappointing run of results since the spring and believes the time is right to take a new direction," said a club statement., external

Although they beat Rotherham on the final day of last season, that has been Wycombe's sole victory in their past 13 games, in all competitions, including this season's Carabao Cup defeat by Stevenage and the Vertu Trophy draw at Reading.

Former Crewe Alexandra manager Morris had been with Wycombe since October 2025, after spending two years on the coaching staff at Stoke City.

The Chairboys might be winless so far this season, but this news comes as a bit of a surprise.

It had been a difficult start to the campaign, facing fancied teams like Sheffield Wednesday, Stockport and MK Dons, but the statement from the club suggests that the form at the end of last season has contributed to the decision.

Fans will draw their own conclusions as to whether that's fair or not.

The ownership group are taking a lot of flak from supporters over this decision.

After Matt Bloomfield left for Luton Town almost two years ago, the owners have hired and fired two very different and contrasting head coaches, signed close to 40 players and reportedly broken the club's transfer record at least twice.

But some supporters will argue that the club is perhaps moving backwards on the pitch, despite the infrastructure improvements off it.
