Wrexham still seeking first win as Imray shines in stalemate with Watford

Phil Parkinson's side came from behind to draw 1-1 with Watford in the first home game of the season on Saturday, with co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac in attendance.

That came after the Reds kicked off the new campaign by playing out another 1-1 stalemate away to Cardiff City.

It should have been bragging rights and a Welsh derby win to start with after Wrexham took an early lead and squandered numerous chances before conceding a last-gasp equaliser.

Against Watford at The Racecourse, Wrexham also had opportunities to seal victory after summer signing Danny Imray levelled midway through the first-half.

Although the Hornets went ahead, once lively wing-back Imray restored parity then only one side looked likely to score the all important next goal.

Imray was a huge attacking threat and he could have had a hat-trick as he continues to look a brilliant addition.

Wrexham didn't create an abundance of clear-cut chances but despite not working the goalkeeper enough, they twice hit the woodwork and were the team pushing for the winner.

Watford, on the back of beating Southampton on the opening weekend, were a threat on the break all afternoon and Wrexham were sloppy in possession at times but solid defending by the Reds meant they didn't look like shipping another goal.

It was a decent enough performance and although Wrexham didn't play the slick football they did for long periods against Cardiff, it was still frustrating not to pick up three points.

They have played some good football so far in the first two games but just haven't taken the chances they've created.

Wrexham need to be more ruthless but with last season's top scorer Josh Windass on his way back from injury and more new signings expected before the transfer window closes on September 1, you feel there's more to come from Parkinson's men.

A lot is expected of the Reds after finishing seventh last term, missing out on the play-offs by two points, but scoring goals when playing well and on top in matches is something that needs addressing if they are going to challenge for promotion once more.

Parkinson wasn't too despondent - Wrexham lost both of their opening matches last season after securing a record-breaking third successive promotion to seal their place in the second tier for the first time in 43 years.

He said: "I thought we started the game really well. Obviously they got the goal with the first real chance they've had and then after that, I thought we responded brilliantly.

"It is always tough when you concede at home but we showed good character and calmness to get back in the game, and we had other chances prior to that.

And then second-half, we dominated the game. They're a dangerous, counter-attacking team and I felt in the main, we handled that well.

"We had moments to have gone and won the game.

"Second-half, the pitch dried up and the speed of our passing wasn't where it needed to be at times, but sometimes some of the build-up play was really good.

"The crossing, too many times we hit the first man and the quality of that needed to be better to create more chances, but we still had the moments to have won the game."
