Michael Decandia has become the latest Academy prospect to sign his first professional contract at Ewood Park.

The 18-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper over a two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

Decandia has been at Rovers since the age of 11 and impressed in the Academy ranks this season, featuring for both the Under-18 and Under-21 sides.

He played every minute of the FA Youth Cup campaign, which saw Paul Butler’s side reach the semi-final stage before losing against Manchester City.

Decandia is now hungry to follow in Tom Atcheson’s footsteps after the defender’s impressive breakout season in the Championship.

“It means a lot to sign my pro deal and it’s a proud moment,” he told RoversTV.

“This season, I feel like I’ve performed well, I’ve been a leader in the group, I’ve helped the younger lads around me and I think I’ve helped the team get far in various competitions, so I’m happy for this moment.

“There’s always going to be injuries and tough times, but I feel like I’ve got through it quite well to get to the point that I’m at now.

“The energy and the relationships I’ve built with my team-mates and coaches while being here, especially this season, have been great and that’s something I hope to build on next year.

“It’s a good feeling to have the trust from the club and I hope that next year I can truly prove my ability.

“You can see all the opportunities given to young players at this club – the likes of Tom Atcheson, who is a centre-back like me – so it’s always in the back of your mind thinking if I can prove my ability and perform well, then hopefully my opportunity will come.”
