Evan Ferguson has said thank you and farewell to AS Roma – and received a positive response from fans.

The Albion centre-forward is facing a long road back after surgery to a persistent ankle problem.

He had hoped for big things in Serie A and was given a rapturous welcome by supporters when he arrived last July.

But, while impressing with his hard work, his chances of success were hindered by injury concerns and the somewhat cautious way in which Roma were set up.

He is expected to miss pre-season back with the Seagulls, according to an update from his Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgromsson recently.

Ferguson posted images from his six months with Roma and wrote: “No one wants their time cut short, but injuries are part of the game. “Thank you to everyone at Roma and to the fans for the support over the last few months.

“Wishing my team-mates and everyone at the club all the best for the future. Forza Roma.”

Ferguson recorded five goals, of which two came in a Europa League game at Celtic, and two assists in 22 total appearances for Roma.

Giallorossi fans posted supportive messages in response.

One wrote: “One of us. You fought and honoured the shirt as long as you could.

Another added: “You were unlucky, Evan. Good luck for the future."

And one predicted: “One day you'll come back. We're waiting for you. You're a phenomenon, Evan."

Ferguson does not seem to have ever fully convinced Fabian Hurzeler but the head coach has always insisted he can have a part to play with the Seagulls.

His priority will now be to return to match fitness with any sort of move in the summer window seeming unlikely.
