Albion fans could see another side of Diego Gomez at the World Cup – after injury to his great friend and former club-mate Julio Enciso.

Gomez is being considered for a No.10 role in Paraguay’s opening game of the tournament as they prepare to face co-hosts USA in Los Angeles.

Former Seagulls forward Enciso was expected to play that role with Gomez as an attack-minded midfielder.

But those close to the Albirroja camp believe Gomez’s versatility and eye for a shot could see him take a berth just off main striker Antonio Sanabria of Cremonese.

Seagulls fans would be interested to see how he gets on were that to be the case.

Gomez arrived at Albion as a central midfielder but played wide to the right in much of the 2025-26 season.

He was one of his team’s more shot-happy players in the Premier League last season, with 1.3 attempts at goal per game, just behind Danny Welbeck, Yasin Ayari and Jack Hinshelwood.

And he ended up as their second top goalscorer in the Prem on five, matching his tally in the Carabao Cup.

Gomez is one of eight Albion players preparing for possible action in the World Cup.

They include Holland goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, who suffered a hip injury in the final friendly but looked to be relaxed and moving easily when the squad arrived in Kansas City on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Enciso looks set to play some part in the group stage for Paraguay, despite a tearful exit during the friendly against Nicaragua.

Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro said: "Julio is good. He has progressed well in the last 24 hours.

“He is day to day. He is very happy with his progress.”

Enciso could make the second group game against Turkey and is certainly expected to be in the frame to face Australia.
