Bart Verbruggen is a doubt for Holland’s opening World Cup fixture.

But the hip injury he suffered against Uzbekistan “could have been worse” according to his national team head coach.

The Albion and Holland No.1 landed heavily in the run-out in New York this week and was replaced by Mark Flekken.

The Dutch are now in Kansas City and Verbruggen did not join the squad in their first training session at their tournament base.

He did some work away from the main group with team staff.

Holland play Japan in Dallas on Sunday.

Head coach Ronald Koeman said after the training session: “Okay, it could have been worse.

“It's just a bruise. We don't know yet what that means for Sunday.

“We are hopeful, but we have to take it day by day to see how far along he is and whether that is enough to keep goal on Sunday.

'We still have a few days, so we'll wait and see because we have good goalkeepers with us.”

Flekken, the former Brentford goalkeeper now with Bayer Leverkusen, replaced Verbruggen against Uzbekistan.

Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper could play for Crawley after taking new role Fans' favourite Veltman in talks over new Albion deal What went wrong for the big Albion sale who has been axed by De Zerbi?

But that could have been because Koeman wanted Sunderland’s Robin Roefs to play the full hour-long second game between the two nations.

The Holland boss added: “We are having discussions with all the players, and tonight I have a meeting with the goalkeepers, in which we will provide clarity. We have figured it out.”
