Albion remain hopeful of signing a man who could stand in England’s path in Dallas tonight.

They want to bring in Croatia centre-back Luka Vuskovic from Spurs after agreeing a fee which takes Jan Paul van Hecke in the opposite direction.

Spurs will pay £52 million for van Hecke, who cost Albion just £1.8 million from NAC Breda in 2020.

There is a 20% sell-on clause for the Seagulls should Spurs ultimately also make a transfer profit on the Holland international but no other add-ons.

At the same time, the Dutch clubs who helped develop van Hecke as a youngster will receive a payment as he goes to North London.

Albion are believed to have seen a £35 million bid for Vuskovic turned down and must now head towards record fee territory if they are to secure their man.

He sees a potentially bright future with the Seagulls and opportunities to progress.

His focus for now is the World Cup and he is expected to play in the middle of a back three for Croatia as they face England.
