Elijah Adebayo took the next step on his road to full fitness as he made his first start since he penned his Bristol City contract as the Reds’ Under-21s hit four against Charlton Athletic at Ashton Gate.

The striker, and fellow forward Sam Bell, started and played 66 minutes for the Young Robins in their 4-1 win over the Addicks on Tuesday afternoon, ahead of the first-team’s return to action after the extended international break this weekend.

Adebayo’s first goal in red and white, as well as a second-half brace from substitute Harry Hogg, and a late Rhys Knight strike proved enough for Louis Carey’s side to secure all three points. The win over Charlton is the Reds’ third of the Professional Development League campaign and extends their unbeaten start to the season.

The Young Robins will have the chance to stretch that record further next week when they host Exeter City at the Robins High Performance Centre in the Premier League Cup. Michael Skubala’s first team will face Charlton, themselves, this weekend at The Valley.

After a cagey opening 20 minutes with few clear-cut chances, Seb Naylor was unable to make the most of the Robins’ first real opportunity. Having controlled a fizzed Knight corner, the former Manchester City prospect powered a low, left-footed effort in search of the bottom right corner, but was only able to find the advertising hoarding on the wrong side of the post.

By that stage, Carey’s side had appeared to have started to find their feet; by the half-hour mark, they had pulled ahead. A swift attacking move saw Elijah Morrison break down the left wing and pick out Bell inside the penalty area with a curling cross.

The 24-year-old set back a clever pass into the feet of Adebayo with his first touch and, with a right-foot finish - as well as the aid of a deflection - the striker picked out the bottom right corner to score his first goal in City colours.

In spite of the fact that they had fallen behind, it was Charlton who had the better of the chances over the remainder of the opening period. A smart reaction stop from Brad Collins was required to keep out Ellis McMillan’s low free-kick, but the keeper was then left stranded when Kayode Peterkin headed the rebound against the woodwork from close range.

Through a mix of good work and a bit of good fortune, the Reds were able to enter the interval with their noses ahead.

But Charlton picked up where they left off after the restart, with Phoenix Valentine the next player to attempt to get the better of Collins. Having driven in-field from the left flank, the full-back aimed to curl a right-footed shot into the top right corner from range, narrowly steering outside of the far post. Josh Hebert then did similar moments later, driving a low shot from the opposite side of the box beyond the opposite piece of woodwork.

That pressure told within 10 minutes of the start of the second period, when the Addicks pulled level. Having forced Marley Thelwell to give up possession deep in the Robins’ half, McMillan drove towards the penalty area before slipping a pass into the path of Kai Enslin.

With a composed, left-footed finish, the Charlton forward slotted just out of Collins’ reach and into the bottom right corner to set up an interesting final half-an-hour.

Shortly after the equaliser, the Reds withdrew their senior outfield players, and in their place, Luke Skinner, Devont’e Ferguson and Taine Anderson entered the fray. With a little over 10 minutes left to play, Skinner and fellow substitute Harry Hogg combined to restore City’s advantage.

The Weston-super-Mare loanee picked out the midfielder just inside the penalty area after a mazy run from the right wing, and with his right foot, Hogg was able to pick out the top left corner. Just five minutes later, the teenager was alert to control Thelwell’s deflected cross to turn home his second and City’s third with his left boot to seemingly wrap up the three points.

There was, however, time for one last surprise. Deep in stoppage time, and with the game already over as a contest, Knight fired a shot from range through bodies and into the bottom left corner to put the result beyond doubt and ensure that the Young Robins’ October started on a winning note.

Skubala's side, which will likely include Adebayo and Bell, will look to do the same against the Addicks this coming weekend.
