The head coach explained that Pepple would have played the whole of Southern Section Group E game away to Newport County given the opportunity.

Instead, Cleverley called upon the 23-year-old when he made a triple 60th minute substitution, immediately after his side had fallen 2-0 behind.

It was a planned change for Pepple to replace Caleb Watts at that time and he went on to have a big impact on the match.

The Canadian striker scored for a sixth game out of the last seven in all competitions when he ran through on goal in the 75th minute and slotted past goalkeeper Shaun MacDonald to cut Argyle's deficit to 2-1.

Later, after a Tyreeq Bakinson 90th minute equaliser and deep into added time, Pepple had a spot kick saved by MacDonald after he had been fouled.

That meant a penalty shoot-out was held to determine which of the two teams picked up an extra point and Pepple was among the successful takers as Argyle won that 5-4.

Cleverley told Plymouth Live about Pepple's involvement against Newport: "I love the attitude, Bim wants to play. Bim would have played 95 minutes tonight.

"He wants to score, he wants to keep his run going. I love that mentality, so Bim was chomping at the bit and got an important goal."

Argyle already have striker Owen Oseni ruled out by an ankle issue which he suffered in the previous EFL Trophy tie, the 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace under-21s at Home Park.

However, there was never a chance of top scorer Pepple not being involved against Newport, with Cleverley giving three reasons for that.

"One, we respect the competition and we respect the opposition," he said. "Two, if he had stayed back home with Joe (Edwards), Mitch (Alex Mitchell) and Evo (Will Evans) today he could have got injured in that training session.

"And, three, when you have got a striker chomping at the bit who's in form and high confidence then why not give him half-an-hour when the game opens up a little bit?

"It's one of them where we go home, he has impacted the result, I have got a happy striker, all's well.

"But I have to be careful there doesn't come a day where we pay the price for that, and we overuse him or we put him in a really physical game when I don't need to."

Cleverley added: "People will talk about his power but Bim's a serious finisher. He's one of those, a bit like Lorent (Tolaj), where he goes through on goal and there is a calmness that comes over me.

"There could have been 60,000 in here today and he would have been the same in front of goal, left or right foot he's a top, top finisher and his record is showing that."
