His son Alan, told Plymouth Live: "He served in the Welsh Guards at the end of the Second World War. This is when he met and became friends with Arthur Rowley, who played for WBA, and then later his brother Jack, who of course managed Argyle. "He joined Argyle in June 1965. He didn't apply for the job of secretary but was basically head hunted by the vice chairman Doug Fletcher. "He was reluctant to accept the post as at that time Argyle were changing secretaries as often as they were changing managers. "However it seems that Mr Fletcher was able to persuade him to take the job. He never regretted it. He loved the job.. He worked with 12 managers and got on well with all of them, and some became lifelong friends. "I was always amazed and impressed with how he got on with people generally. People within the game, and people and organisations he had to deal with, and over such a long period of time. "He had a good relationship with Plymouth City Council, the police, local TV, and of course the local press - Harley Lawer, Ray Head, and Graham Hambly. "He also had a great relationship built over many years with Arsenal Football Club. He knew Ken Friar their secretary well and when he retired Arsenal sent the whole first team squad to Home Park for his testimonial. It was quite a night and quite a tribute."
