For all a meeting with Tottenham evokes a particular memory for many Coventry City fans – and Lampard was asked about his memories of that day – there was nothing sentimental on show at the club’s base in Ryton.

First team training was still going on when most of the media arrived at around 12.45pm, Lampard appeared in the new suite slightly less than an hour later and for all the broadcasters wanted to bask in the afterglow of Monday evening’s four goal salvo, Lampard was keen to move on.

What had been termed as an almost perfect performance against Newcastle, had been analysed with a more critical eye.

“Well I guess no performance is absolutely complete,” Lampard said. “On the evening it felt, from where we've been and where we're trying to get to, that it was an improvement.

“There's so much more that we can do and much more we can improve and when you analyse the game back that's quite clear as well.”

Even consecutive victories, the addition of six points and five goals, where just two games ago there were neither of either, was kept in context: “I'm always fearful of resting on something and thinking that you've you've made it, this league's too difficult for that.

“One of my first jobs is to keep pushing on that front, and the players need to feel that.”

And there was certainly no looking any further down the road than Tottenham, not to seemingly more inviting fixtures against Sunderland, Fulham and Everton in the lead up to the next international break.

“I think it's easy for you to say it's just a fact of the table at the moment, but I’ve been around too long to understand that games that people may expect you to win…. of all our games this season Hull was the one we were expected to win and we lost it," he said.

Lampard was, though, more comfortable talking about the development of his team, a side that has one of the lowest levels of Premier League experience in the division. He offered expansive answers on the progress his players have made, how they have carried themselves around the training ground with more belief.

He was especially fulsome on the role played by the substitutes on Monday night. Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni coming off the bench to score, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto helping them and Victor Torp and Frank Onyeka seeing the victory over the line. Not for the first time he was moved to express his ‘love’ for the low-maintenance Sakamoto.

And as the conference drew to an end, or at least to the point where the embargo kicks in, the subject turned to Tottenham and the fact his Spurs counterpart Roberto De Zerbi is still looking for his first win of the league campaign, the businesslike air returned.

“I understand, we’re all under pressure," he said.
