Still only 22, the left footed wide man who operates largely on the right appears to have been brought in to Coventry City to add competition and back-up to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, while Jahnoah Markelo was also brought in last January and hoped to add quality, albeit yet to get a great deal of game time. For Tchaouna, he’s had more than a taste of top flight football that will hopefully hold him in good stead for the season ahead with the Sky Blues. Described as a “raw” talent, the player came up through Strasboug and Rennes’ youth systems and represented France through all age groups to the Under-21s. He got his first run of consistent game time on loan with Dijon before moving to Italy to join Serie A side Salernitana on a three-year contract, still a teenager. However, Salernitana suffered a dismal campaign during the 2023–24 season going through four different managers and only winning two league games in the whole campaign. Initial thoughts: It’s fair to say the prospect of making an £8m profit on a player that was largely underwhelming last season has taken a lot of Burnley fans by surprise. That’s not to say there isn’t a player in there, he clearly has the potential and has all the attributes you’d want from a winger - so you can see why Frank Lampard would be interested - but £20m does seem a little excessive for a player that only scored three goals in 32 appearances. So from Burnley’s perspective, it’s a good piece of business. Qualities and things to work on: He’s a good height, he’s stocky and well built, he’s good with both feet and he’s got a good, powerful shot on him - his long-range thunderbolt against Leeds United is well worth a watch. But too often he would drift in and out of games and look indecisive in the final third, he’d struggle to keep hold of the ball and, while he’s capable of brilliance with his shooting, too often he’d be wild and off target. Developing talent: Raw is probably the best way to describe him. There’s a player in there that could be developed if you’re a club with time and patience on your side. But for a side like Coventry, and similarly with Burnley last season, you need players that are going to hit the ground running and lay down an instant impact, especially when you’re paying that type of fee. Sunderland got that right last season, Burnley clearly didn’t. Playing to his strengths and in search of consistency: If anything, he probably could have done with a season in the Championship where there’s less pressure and more of an opportunity to grab some goals and assists, build up some confidence and work on his game. If I were to play devil’s advocate to my own argument, perhaps the way Scott Parker wanted to set up didn’t suit his game and of course you’re going to struggle to make an impression for a side that won just four games and picked up a measly 22 points. But even if you look further back in his career, it all follows a similar pattern. Bits of promise, but otherwise largely inconsistent.
