The Sky Blues have reportedly lodged a bid to sign Rushworth permanently after a superb spell on loan last season which saw him win the Championship Golden Glove.

Coventry owner Doug King and manager Frank Lampard have made no secret of their desire to sign Rushworth but the ball is in Brighton’s court.

Brighton have two young goalkeepers who are in-demand this summer and Coventry’s pursuit of Rushworth could well be affected by their stance on number one Bart Verbruggen.

Newcastle United are looking to revamp their goalkeeping department and Verbruggen is one of the names on their list, as per ChronicleLive.

Brighton supposedly value Verbruggen – a 23-year-old goalkeeper who has already been capped 28 times by the Netherlands – at around £50million.

A sale could complicate the Rushworth deal, as his agent Stephen Hunt alluded to in a recent conversation on the 1904 Podcast.

“Goalkeepers are different. There’s a big chain of goalkeepers,” said Hunt. “Verbruggen... So it’s not just Carl’s decision to go or whatever, there’s a lot more to it.”

Rushworth has 12 months remaining on his contract at Brighton, albeit the Seagulls have the option to extend it by a further 12 months, and is believed to be open to a return to Coventry.
