Coventry City’s promotion-winning goalkeeper Carl Rushworth has been offered to Newcastle United, according to reports.

Sister title The Chronicle understand the Toon have scouted the Brighton & Hove Albion ‘keeper in the past but are yet to reach a point where they have actually held formal talks. That comes against the backdrop of a report in the Daily Mail claiming they had actually held talks.

Indeed Eddie Howe is currently considering his options between the sticks with with Manchester City’s James Trafford their top target, albeit a reported price tag of £30million could prove an obstacle.

They have also been linked with Japan international Zion Suzuki, who is at Parma and has also been linked with Aston Villa and Leeds United – but Rushworth’s name has also been mentioned.

The Chronicle say Newcastle have not yet proceeded with a move for the 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan at the CBS Arena.

Indeed the Seagulls’ stopper made such an impression the Sky Blues have made an offer to sign him permanently but their opening bid has been rebuffed.

That leaves Frank Lampard with only Ben Wilson and Oliver Dovin as options as pre-season looms, although City still have more than a month before the Premier League season starts – and nearly seven weeks until the transfer window closes.

They have also been linked with Everton’s Mark Travers, Manchester United’s Radek Vitek and Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson but in an ideal world they would strike a deal with Brighton for a player who has already hinted he wants to return to the Sky Blues.

Rushworth played 46 times for the Sky Blues last season, starting every Championship match, and kept an impressive 17 clean sheets.

Owner Doug King revealed in March he tried to buy Rushworth when Dovin was injured 12 months earlier and while there seems to be a good fit between player and club, King has already suggested they won’t be held to ransom on players.

So far City have added Burnley winger Loum Tchaouna and Eintracht Frankfurt centre back Aurele Amenda as they look to give Lampard the tools to ensure their stay in the top flight isn’t for one season only.
