The 23-year-old is of clear interest to the Blues heading into an important transfer window as the club seek to strengthen David Moyes’ hand in what senior figures have described as the second part of a two-stage squad rebuild started last summer by owners Friedkin Group.

Hackney, courted by a number of Premier League clubs, sees Everton as his preferred destination but progress would be dependent on the club reaching an agreement with Middlesbrough over the Championship player of the year.

There is distance between the clubs on his valuation, however, with Boro understood to be pushing for a deal of around £20m. As the ECHO reported last week, there was an initial belief Hackney would be available for much less given he is about to enter the final year of his contract.

Hopes that a quick deal could be struck are dwindling with Middlesbrough aware he has plenty of suitors and now indicating they would be willing to lose him on a free in 12 months if their price is not met, such is his importance to their hopes of a return to the Premier League.

As the Championship play-off finalists seek to hold firm, new interest is said to be emerging from the clutch of clubs also tracking Hackney.

The Mail reported on Tuesday that one of them, Palace, are preparing to enter the battle for the midfielder. The Europa Conference League winners will be able to offer Europa League football next season by virtue of that success last month, though the club is in a state of flux following the departure of manager Oliver Glasner.

Everton have considered other options in the same position in the run-up to the transfer window, with Southampton’s Shea Charles a player tracked.

Four other Premier League clubs have now registered their interest in the 22-year-old with a move to the top flight likely this summer after Southampton, like Middlesbrough, failed to progress from the Championship play-offs.

Charles showcased his credentials in Northern Ireland’s 3-1 friendly defeat to France on Monday by creating the goal that brought his side back into the contest.

After the game, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill was full of praise and said: “Shea again demonstrated that he is ready for the game at this level. He is ready for the top level of the game, in my opinion.”

Meanwhile, Fulham playmaker Harry Wilson, another player who has been on Everton’s radar, still has a contract offer on the table at Craven Cottage, the club has confirmed.

The Blues enquired about the 29-year-old in January but his asking price exceeded their valuation given his contract is due to expire at the end of this month.

Wilson would therefore be available on a free should he choose to walk away from the offer put to him by Fulham. He is another player whose situation is being tracked by multiple clubs.
