Lukaku faces an uncertain future after the World Cup with the former Everton having endured a difficult campaign in Serie A with Napoli. The 33-year-old scored once in five league appearances during a year blighted by injury.

His next step is unclear, though, a situation made even more uncertain by Napoli having parted ways with manager Antonio Conte.

For Lukaku, the World Cup is the current focus as he attempts to lead Belgium into the latter stages of the tournament.

Ahead of the spectacle, ex-Tottenham Hotspur defender Alderweireld, who played alongside the forward on the international stage for years, has suggested Lukaku would benefit from playing at a club where he feels appreciated - raising the prospect of a return to Everton in the process.

Alderweireld said: “I don't know what Romelu Lukaku wants to do, but he can come back to the Premier League, for sure.

“The thing is, I think he needs to go somewhere where he's loved. I think that's very important. I think he wants to go to Anderlecht at the end of his career, but yeah, could he join Everton, Aston Villa or Newcastle? Yeah, why not?

“I think he can still do a lot of damage in the Premier League.”

Lukaku scored 87 goals across 166 appearances in a four-season spell with Everton before leaving for Manchester United.

David Moyes is open to signing a striker if a player he believes improves upon current options Thierno Barry and Beto becomes available on suitable terms.

Moyes is, however, reluctant to pour resources into players with troubling injury records - one of several hurdles to any potential reunion.

*Toby Alderweireld was speaking in association with BOYLE Sports 2 Goals Ahead. The early payout offer allows fans to back a team and if they go two goals up at any point during a 90-minute match (e.g 2-0, 3-1, 4-2), BOYLE Sports will immediately settle as a winning bet, no matter the final result.
