In a repeat of the last Women’s World Cup final in 2023, England faced Spain in their penultimate European League A Group 3 qualifier on Friday, but unlike that previous meeting when they were edged out 1-0 for the trophy, the Lionesses (who won 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Wembley) were thrashed 4-0 in Majorca.

Both nations now have 12 points from five games, but Spain’s superior head-to-head record takes England’s destiny out of their own hands if they’re to qualify automatically for next year’s finals in Brazil rather than go through another two rounds of play-offs.

Although England walloped Ukraine 6-1 last time out in March and are expected to win comfortably again, the Dutch born coach, who has steered her side to back-to-back European Championship successes, admits she’s been left praying for a miracle in Reykjavik where Iceland host Spain at the same time (both games kick off at 8pm). Asked whether she had sent a message to Iceland, Wiegman said: “Yeah, yeah. Good luck!

“I always hope. Football is unpredictable. Of course, beforehand, everyone thinks Spain will win that game. But we have seen so many unexpected scorelines, of course I’m hoping for that.

“At the same time, I’m totalling focusing on our team and what we have to do to win the game. Then, we’ll see what happens.”

The 56-year-old added: “We have someone there, so we know. But we’re not planning on sharing that with the players.

“We know what to do and we have to win this game and that’s what we’re going after.

“For us (the coaching staff), we want to be updated live with what’s going on there. But we won’t be focusing on that.”

Wiegman is thrilled to see her side, who along with Wembley, have played home matches at Derby County, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Southampton this season, become the first England team to turn out at Everton’s stunning new 52,769 capacity waterfront base though. She said: “I’m really looking forward to it. Going around the country is really nice, but playing in this new stadium, in Liverpool, which is a big city, a football city, yeah, I feel excited.

“I’m grateful that we can play here. We play in many very exciting stadiums and I think England has many exciting stadiums and areas to play in, and we’re going around a little bit and I’m really enjoying that.”

Meanwhile, fans attending the fixture can kick-things off by staging a raucous welcome for the Lionesses. Supporters arriving early are encouraged to make their way to the Western Wharf (adjacent to the River Mersey), where a stepped terrace provides the perfect platform to welcome both team coaches on their arrival.

Access to the Western Terrace is available via the perimeter at the end of the North and South Stands, with the Ukraine team coach expected around 6.20pm, closely followed by Wiegman and the England players, circa 6.30pm.

Preceding the team arrivals, Lionesses legend and former Everton star Jill Scott will also arrive on the Western Wharf at the conclusion of the second day of her extraordinary charity challenge to raise money for Comic Relief/Sport Relief.

Jill is due to cycle onto the Wharf at 6.10pm, following a punishing 99-mile ride from Aston Villa to Hill Dickinson Stadium. Her five-day duathlon involves a journey from Wembley Stadium, cycling and running a total of 388 miles and visiting every club she played for, finishing at the Stadium of Light in her hometown of Sunderland. You can read more about the charity challenge, and how you can donate HERE.

Please note that capacity on the Western Terrace is limited and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Once capacity is reached, the area will be closed for safety reasons.

Fans are encouraged to bring flags and banners to help create a vibrant and colourful atmosphere. However, we respectfully remind supporters that pyrotechnics of any kind - including smoke grenades, smoke bombs, canisters and flares - are strictly prohibited on the stadium footprint.

Tickets for the fixture can still be purchased HERE

Everton has produced a special event guide for supporters attending the game. The guide, available at the link, below, will help all supporters to plan their visit, including the extensive Travel Hub with advice and directions on how to travel to the stadium.

The guide also contains information on food and drink options, digital tickets, accessibility, WiFi and phone connectivity, safeguarding, bag and flag policies, and what’s happening in and around the ground, including interactive stadium maps.
