# Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s England usage promotes theory that benefits Leeds United

But he might not. Either way, his usage by Thomas Tuchel so far this break appears ominous. The attacker has only benefitted from a late, 83rd-minute substitute at home to world champions Spain. He got just one touch.

Indeed, while his lack of pitch time might come as encouragement to Leeds United fans, amid his prior injury record, it does his own England hopes no favours, nor his own morale.

He is the only other current number nine in the current squad. Yet when the imperious Harry Kane has been taken off the field in the two games since that initial defeat at Wembley, Tuchel has decided to deploy Jude Bellingham as a false nine.

Tuchel did state ahead of this break that he would not rotate his team much. But even so, Calvert-Lewin would have still hoped for more action given the shallow striker depth.

Just as Tuchel has offered an insight into what could lie ahead in goal, by starting James Trafford for two games - against World Cup winners Spain and then Czechia away, he might also be doing so in attack.

There is no clear up-and-coming, long-term prodigy behind Kane, at least not right now. Tuchel might feel he has to think more laterally as a result, hence his usage of Bellingham.

If there was any time to throw on Calvert-Lewin, it was when England had put Croatia to the sword amid their 5-0 half-time lead. Yet he stayed on the bench throughout.

This could be explained more should Calvert-Lewin start tonight's game. If he does not, then the cloud of question over Calvert-Lewin grows.

This is a striker beaming with confidence after four goals in his first seven games of this season. He is, for all intents and purposes, at top tilt. Yet he has only been trusted with seven minutes thus far.

Perhaps irksomely for Calvert-Lewin, England have continued to put in the crosses too - swinging in 15 accurate attempts over the last three matches; 11 more than their opponents combined. Oh, for just one during his seven minutes against a smaller-statured Spain side.

It would be brutal for Tuchel to not use Calvert-Lewin in any capacity later tonight but the message has already been sent regardless of what happens, barring something special.

If not deployed, in the short-term, Leeds may be feeling as though Tuchel needn’t have bothered. Sure, the risk of in-game injury has not been there.

But Calvert-Lewin has been put through his paces in training when, at least for a portion of this break, he could instead have had a proper rest.

Again, if not used today then there is a question of whether he fits into what Tuchel envisages for the next phase of this England team.

Kane will turn 35 at the home European Championships in two years' time while Calvert-Lewin will still only be 31.

That is the prime age of a striker of his profile. Yet if Calvert-Lewin is left on the bench today then that sets a new reality. If not now, during a little-value Nations League competition, then when?

If that is to be the final call - something Calvert-Lewin will try his damndest to prevent - then ultimately Leeds will benefit. Rest periods will come during the international windows and Daniel Farke can perhaps sleep a little easier.

After all, should Calvert-Lewin pick up a significant issue while on international duty, the potential ramifications are clear. And not just regarding the reaction of the fanbase.
